Good value tyres, great service and friendly people. Too good to be true?
Well usually yes, especially if you frequent some of the larger “household name” tyre and exhaust service centres. Martin’s tyres was very different. Tucked away in West End, a stone’s throw from Lightwater, I had been recommended to Martin’s by the mechanic who looks after my car.
I needed a new tyre for my Kangoo van and so I thought I would give Martin’s a try. I had been a faithful customer of Humphrey’s in Bagshot, but they recently fell under the Kwik Fit banner, so it was time to move on.
I pulled up onto the rather tatty forecourt and my heart sank. This was like something from the 50’s. If you know Camberley at all, you will know the old fashioned looking garage opposite American Golf on the A30? This looked about the same.
As I got out of my Kangoo I was already approached by Paul, the man who is obviously in charge, who was talking into a telephone headset. I said I thought I needed a new tyre – he agreed immediately saying my front nearside was already on the limit. How on earth did he know that? He hadn’t even had time to turn around! Or so I thought. Anyway, sure enough it was close to illegal when he showed me and he quoted me £31.25 straight off the top of his head. I was pleased at the price which was about 2/3 of what I’d paid last time and he asked me to take a seat in the waiting room, which I did, expecting quite a long wait. (There seemed to be no fancy kit at all lying around to take tyres off and so on.
I read about half a column of one page of the car magazine in the waiting room and he was back. “Uh oh” I thought, “Here we go, maybe I need more than one tyre”. But no! He was back to take payment and say the van was all finished and ready to go.
Now I’m not kidding when I say that this whole process from pulling onto the forecourt to driving off again took place in less time than I had been accustomed to spending in just getting someone to look at the van at Humphrey’s and I hadn’t been unhappy with them!
Amazing service. I will be taking my car there for 4 tyres in the next week or so. Give them a try – you will be impressed.
